Edmund Hillary, First to Scale Mount Everest, Dies
"You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things -- to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals."
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008)[1][2] was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt.
Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand-born adventurer who defied the failed efforts of countless climbers by reaching the peak of Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain, has died. He was 88.
Hillary died of a heart attack in Auckland City Hospital at 9 a.m. local time today. His death ``is a profound loss for New Zealand,'' Prime Minister Helen Clark said in a statement.
"It is not the mountains that we conquer, but ourselves."
